	In three of the hundreds of communities that make up the vast Maya population of present day Guatemala Indian artists produce oil paintings about Mayan life. Those communities are Cakchiquel speaking San Juan Comalapa, and the Tz'utuhil speaking towns of Santiago Atitlan and San Pedro la Laguna. At present this website deals only with the Tz'utuhil-speaking artists, and mainly with the artists from San Pedro la Laguna and its close neighbor San Juan la Laguna. 	The Archive is an visual exhibition of Tz'utuhil Mayan paintings for your on-line enjoyment (as contrasted to the Paintings where the paintings are for sale). The paintings are arranged by artist, and listed more or less chronologically by when the artist painted them.

Pinturas en Exposición: El Archivo es una exhibición visual de pinturas Mayas Tz’utuhiles para que las disfrute en línea (en contraste con la Pinturas [Paintings] dónde las pinturas están a la venta). 	The biographies of some of the better known Tz'utuhil Mayan artists, tell how painting began in San Pedro and then spread to San Juan. Included in this section are two articles by Benjamin Paul an anthropologist emeritus from Stanford University, has been writing about the customs of San Pedro since he first visited there in 1940. One article called The Maya Bonesetter as Sacred Specialist is about the curanderos of San Pedro la Laguna who were famous throughout Guatemala; the other written with William Demarest is called The Operation of a Death Squad in San Pedro la Laguna. All the articles are illustrated by paintings by these artists.
.	Historias—Artículos: Las biografías de algunos de los más conocidos artistas Mayas Tz’utuhiles cuentan como empezó la pintura en San Pedro y luego se difundió a San Juan. En esta sección están incluidos dos artículos de Benjamín Paul, un antropólogo emérito de la Universidad de Stanford que ha estado escribiendo acerca de las costumbres de San Pedro desde que estuvo de visita por primera vez en 1,940. Un artículo titulado Los Curanderos Mayas como Especialistas Sagrados es acerca de los curanderos de San Pedro la Laguna que era famosos en toda Guatemala; el otro escrito por William Demarest titulado La Operación de un Escuadrón de Muerte en San Pedro la Laguna. Todos los artículos están ilustrados con pinturas de estos artistas.

	The Mayan weaving typical of Guatemala is a vast subject, larger still if the Mayans in southern Mexico are included. By limiting ourselves to the textiles produced in the towns and villages surrounding Lake Atitlán, the area where the Tz'utuhil Mayan artists live, we can get a good idea of the richness and variety of Mayan textiles throughout. After a long haitus we have expanded this section with separate pages for a number of the towns around the lake. Margot Blum Shevill, the author much of this section, has written numerous books and articles on the textiles of Guatemala. We are fortunate to have her working with us.
.	Tejidos típicos del Lago de Atitlán: Los tejidos Mayas típicos de Guatemala es un tema extenso, aún más grande si se incluyen los Mayas del sur de México. Al limitarnos a los tejidos típicos producidos en pueblos y aldeas que rodean el lago de Atitlán, el área donde viven los artistas Mayas Tz’utuhiles, nos podemos hacer una buena idea de la riqueza y variedad de tejidos Mayas en todo el territorio. 	Two other sites on the WWW deal with Tz'utuhil Mayan artists. Sites which we find exceptional and relate in some manner to our goals may occasionally be included in our list of links. Many sites spend a lot of energy maintaining excellent lists of links on such related topics as: art, Guatemala, Mayans, or Native Americans. Rather than try to duplicate their contributions, we would rather spend our time finding good lists of links and point you in their direction. 	This section includes a magazine interview with us which perhaps better explains who we are and how we got started than anything we have tried to write about the subject.  We also have a page which talks about a  project spearheaded by artist Pedro Rafael to get pencils for all the children in the school where he teaches. Arte Maya Tz'utuhil has helped actualize the vision of one Pedrano to establish a Spanish school for travelers in San Pedro la Laguna.
	El Arte Maya Tz’utuhil: Esta sección incluye una entrevista que nos hizo una revista, que explica mejor que cualquier cosa que hemos tratado de escribir al respecto, quienes somos y como empezamos. También tenemos una página que habla de un proyecto encabezado por el artista Pedro Rafael, para obtener lápices para todos los estudiantes de la escuela donde él enseña. Arte Maya Tz’utuhil ha ayudado a actualizar la visión de un nativo de San Pedro de establecer una escuela de español para viajeros en San Pedro la Laguna.
